HUT: Delivering Data-Powered Decision Making for Wales’ Manufacturing Industry

Commissioned by the Welsh Government (WG)

Assignment Background

In January 2022, HelpUsTrade partnered with OPUS Ltd to initiate a groundbreaking project titled “Supply Chain Analysis for Manufacturing and Related Sectors” for the Welsh Government. Tasked with revolutionising the manufacturing landscape, HelpUsTrade and OPUS collaborated with Astario Ltd to leverage governmental data sources and provide actionable insights.

The project’s comprehensive scope aimed to optimise manufacturing supply chains across various sectors including housing, security, construction, transport, and renewable energy.

Objectives and Approach

The project’s primary objective was to conduct an exhaustive supply chain analysis, utilising governmental data sources to gain practical insights into Wales’ manufacturing ecosystem. To achieve this, HelpUsTrade adopted a multi-faceted approach, encompassing macro-level analyses, sector-specific examinations, and strategic recommendations.

By focusing on key components such as raw material sourcing, production processes, distribution networks, and market dynamics, the team aimed to empower the Welsh Government with data-driven decision-making capabilities.

Key Deliverables

HelpUsTrade’s responsibilities spanned configuring data-management systems, conducting thorough macro manufacturing environment analyses, and developing Geographic Information System (GIS) mapping for visual representation. By conducting Pareto analyses and detailed drill-down examinations, the team identified critical factors impacting each sector within the manufacturing landscape.

This granular approach enabled the formulation of targeted interventions and strategic recommendations tailored to the unique needs of each sector. Additionally, the partnership provided supply chain maps and reporting capabilities, ensuring stakeholders had access to actionable insights for informed decision-making.

“HelpUsTrade was delighted to partner with the Welsh Government on this groundbreaking project. We are incredibly proud of the collaborative effort that went into analysing the manufacturing landscape and look forward to the positive impact it will have on Wales’s economic future.”

Prof. Dermot Cahill, Director, HelpUsTrade

Project Outputs

The culmination of the project yielded several impactful outputs designed to drive transformative change within Wales’ manufacturing sector. A comprehensive supply chain insight report provided stakeholders with a holistic view of the manufacturing landscape, highlighting opportunities for optimisation and growth.

Furthermore, the implementation of a data-driven decision support system tailored for the Welsh Government equipped officials with user-friendly interfaces and tools to interpret and act upon insights derived from the supply chain analysis. Strategic intervention recommendations offered practical steps for addressing identified challenges and optimising opportunities, while a framework for enhanced collaboration within the manufacturing ecosystem fostered increased cooperation between government entities, industry stakeholders, and other relevant parties.

Policy adjustment proposals based on data-driven insights aimed to create an enabling environment for manufacturing growth, innovation, and sustainability, further solidifying Wales’ position as a hub for manufacturing excellence.

Impact and Future Implications

The project’s impact extended far beyond its completion, setting the stage for continued growth and innovation within Wales’ manufacturing sector. By equipping the Welsh Government with actionable insights and strategic recommendations,

HelpUsTrade facilitated a shift towards data-driven decision-making and collaborative engagement. The enhanced collaboration framework established during the project laid the groundwork for ongoing partnerships and initiatives aimed at driving sustainable growth and fostering resilience within the manufacturing community.

Additionally, policy adjustment proposals based on empirical evidence positioned Wales as a forward-thinking region committed to creating an enabling environment for manufacturing success. As Wales continues to navigate evolving economic landscapes, the insights gleaned from this project will serve as a cornerstone for informed decision-making and strategic planning, ensuring the continued prosperity of the manufacturing sector for years to come.
